Race Expo

· Uncategorized

We went to the Whole Foods health expo this evening to pick up our race packets that had our bib numbver, our champion chip, and other running shwag. We’re excited. We also signed up for the pace team we’re going to run with. I am really hoping the pace team will help pull us through the race. I think it’s going to work out well!!

But geez, the expo in Chicago was gigantic!! It was like a mini Auto Show compared to the expo tonight. That’s okay though. We still loved it!

Tick tick tick...

· Uncategorized

Let’s hope I can suck down as much water as my body will hold for the next two days. You’re supposed to get real hyrdrated and eat a lot of carbs and protein during the last week. I think I’ve been eating a good amount of carbs, but I’ve definitely slipped a little on ingesting protein. I am having at least two 35g protein shakes today, if not 3, and the same thing tomorrow.

As I sit here, I’d rather be at home, completely resting and getting focused…but, a guy’s gotta make a living, too!

Only 3 more days!

· Uncategorized

PHEW! We have only 3 more days until the big race! The weather reports are showing it to be slightly colder than it was last year in Chicago. At first, it looked like it might be REALLY cold, low 40s for a high, with rain. But as of now, it’s looking like it’ll be in the high 30s in the morning with a high temperature in the 50s with afternoon rain showers. We can dig that. Afternoon rain is just fine when we’re at home or out to eat, resting. We’ll have to be studying for our midterm we have the following day though, which kind of sucks. But how hard can it be? I’m hoping it’s not too hard. Monday night will be more of a “relief” night than Sunday night, I’m thinking.

Rush Limbaugh
I don’t know enough about the guy, but I guess he tried to take a crack at being a football analyst on ESPN. The other day, he made a comment that Donovan McNabb, the QB for the Philadelphia Eagles, was overrated as a QB because the NFL wanted a black quarterback to succeed. Read this story.

Centipede joke

· Uncategorized

This guy was lonely and decided life would be more fun if he had a pet. So
he went to the pet store and told the owner that he wanted to buy an
unusual pet.

After some discussion, he finally bought a centipede (100-legged bug),
Which came in a little white box to use for his house. He took the box
back home, found a good location for the box, and decided he would start off by
taking his new pet to the bar to have a drink.

So he asked the centipede in the box, “Would you like to go to Frank’s
with me and have a beer?”

But there was no answer from his new pet.

This bothered him a bit, but he waited a few minutes and then asked him
again, “How about going to the bar and having a drink with me?”

But again, there was no answer from his new friend and pet. So he waited a
few minutes more, thinking about the situation.

He decided to ask him one more time, this time putting his face up against
the centipede’s house and shouting, “Hey, in there! Would you like to go to
Frank’s place and have a drink with me?”

YOU ARE GOING TO LOVE THIS!

A little voice came out of the box:

“I heard you the first time! I’m putting on my shoes!!!”

My cousin Georgia: Died 09/27/2003

Dino’s Tribute to her life.

My cousin Georgia (aka Gogoula) passed away on Saturday, September 27, 2003. She is the daughter of John and Kiki Filias.

About 11 days ago, she had an aneurysm in the back of her brain. This aneurysm hemorrhaged (from what I understand) and the back of her brain had a large amount of blood collected. The doctors were hoping this blood would get absorbed, naturally. It didn’t. She never got better. She leaves behind a loving husband, a 9 year old girl, Joanna, and a 14 year old boy, Bill.

Along with my entire family, I am very saddened by this. I used to have 13 cousins. Now I have 11. I’ve lost Gus and Gogoula.

I am so glad I had a chance to go to Greece a few times in recent years, as an adult. Having relatives so far away is a 50/50 situation. Half the time, it makes things much easier in terms of obligations, holidays, etc. But the other half of the time, it makes thing have this sort of “helpless” feeling/situation. I would want nothing more in the world than to be in Greece right now, about 8:30AM, as they prepare to get ready for her funeral.

Having this barrier (Atlantic Ocean) between us makes it kind of shitty. I had the opportunity to mourn her loss this morning with my family here, at Dino’s house. Gina is up North camping, with her friends, so she’ll have to mourn on her own when she gets back. Sorry, Gina.

Anyway, Gogoula was always so nice and hospitable to me, Michelle, and my friends. Every time we came to the bar they run in the Summer, we were treated like royalty. Carte blance treatment all the way. I remember the last time we were there, Michelle was out near the water, and I was hanging out in the small kitchen with her. She made me some munchies to eat. Some French Fries and some cheese. It was delicious while I sucked down a few beers in the middle of the day!

One of the most striking memories I had with her was when I went to Greece in 1988, alone, for two months. I think I spent the night at her place for one or two nights. We hung out all day and night. And the part I’ll never forget was that we rented a movie on VHS called The Day After. It was a movie that aired in the U.S. during the Cold War, when the entire planet was afraid of a globalthermonuclear war. It was a movie that was very shocking for the general public. It showed what it would be like, physically, mentally, and emotionally, if the United States was attacked by nuclear weapons. I had always wanted to see it at home, but I missed it. Gogoula was cool enough to have a VCR (pretty cool at the time in Agios Vasilios, Greece). I had a blast with her, those few days in the Summer of 1988.

I’ll miss you, cousin!

My External Womb Idea

· Uncategorized

In talking with my account rep at the company I currently work for, I was reminded of a funny conversation we had. I was explaining to Kendall and Michelle (my reps) the idea I had for an external womb.

It’s like a fish tank that is filled with a gelatinous substance so that you can see the embryo form into a human being the whole time. The gel is transparent, and full of all the nutrients the child will need to grow.

You just add the “juice” as the weeks and months progress, not letting it affect your busy life. It’s the best of both worlds. You bring a baby into this world without the physical and emotional grief of carrying it to term. Imagine, the “mother” could go out after work, have a few cocktails with friends, and never have to worry about hurting the child. For our urban warriors, this is most ideal. Obviously, if you live in Hanging Dog, North Carolina (a real town), there’s not much to do, so hanging out with the baby, built-in, isn’t a bad idear. The sales down there wouldn’t be as high as they would be in a place like Detroit, Chicago, New York (which one of those three is NOT like the other?).

Broke my favorite web-based email client yesterday!

· Uncategorized

I was trying to be slick and upgrade IMP yesterday, which is part of the Horde framework! What a dummy. I not only broke Horde and IMP, but I think I also messed up my PEAR installation. PEAR is a framework that lives within PHP on my server. Well, today, I’m going to try and fix everything. Can I do it? We’ll see. All this Linux stuff is a learning experience, day in and day out.

Thursday NBC Shows
The new Thursday NBC shows start tonight. Pretty excited about them all. Friends is always great, as is Will and Grace. There is also a new show called Coupling which has that hot blonde English lady from The Mind of a Married Man. Her name is Sonya something or other. She’s hot, and her accent is hotter! And last but not least, E.R. is always sensational!

We watched Solaris last night. Strange movie. And I think I fell asleep for about 5 critical minutes near the end of the movie. I have this affliction where if I’m 5% tired, I fall asleep when I’m watching movies… maybe it happens more during the slower ones, the ones that require more thought. Wears a guy out, I guess.

Great 6 miles on the treadmill
We had our last of our longer Wednesday runs last night. It started raining just as we were heading out the door, so we headed to the gym instead, which kind of sucked, as running 6 miles on a treadmill blows! Anyway, had a great run of 50:56!

A bit slow on blogging.

Maybe I’ve just been “booked” the past few days. I haven’t had much energy to write anything. The fire will be fueled soon. I’ve been fighting with getting a job offer at work, to go direct, and with making sure AximUsers.com is what it was meant to be: A KICK ASS SITE for the Dell Axim of now and of the future!

RUNNING IS ALMOST OVER!
We only have a few more runs to go. I could use a break for a few weeks, but this time, I don’t want to quit like I did last year. This year, I’ve got everything in the world going for me. I have a job, as a soon-to-be direct employee of Ford Motor Company, I am in school, I have a house, a new car, and great health for me and my family. Last year, I was laid off, lived in an apartment, had no prospects for jobs because the market seems to slow down a bit during the upcoming holidays, and my cholesterol was high.

What a fantastic weekend!!!

· Uncategorized

This weekend was great. The weather was awesome through and through. Had a nice motorcycle ride yesterday morning, enjoyed watching football (even thought the Lions are disappointing) with Michelle, and really enjoyed running to Michelle’s mom and dad’s house where we had a mini-birthday celebration! Good thing they were home, as we needed the ride back!

I think week one was just a joke.

The Lions, time after time, cause many a diehard Lions fan grief. They are going to lose their 2nd in a row and their first home game this year. They should at least win home games, ya know?

Happy Birthday Michelle and Dino's Disastrous Drinking!

· Uncategorized

Today is my wife’s birthday! We had a nice breakfast with her dad, and now they are off to go hit golf balls to get Michelle ready for her work’s golf outing on Friday.

Dino got wasted, well, we all did!
Pictures of this exciting night!

Jon and Dawn had their first social gathering amongst our friends yesterday. Good food, great actually, good times, good drinks, and good laughs! In attendance were Me, Michelle, Jesse (Jason), Dino, Danielle, Mitch, Vesna, and of course, Jon and Dawn. Jon made some crazy good food! Stuffed shells, tube noodles with an awesome sauce, various Italian sausages in an amazing sauce, an amazing salad, and to top it off, exceptional steaks grilled to our liking! But lemme tell ya about the fun drinking escapades! Jon and I were drinking Crown Royal and Cokes (diet for me), Dino was making his usual, Killer Koolaid (which has a few different liquors…mixing is bad…you’ll find out later), and in the meanwhile, we were doing shots of some Cuervo 1800 Tequila! And boy oh boy, throw Tequila into the mix, and EVERYONE not only gets wasted, but people start getting S I C K! And the PERSON, not people, that got sick was Dino. He first threw up in Jon’s sink… not bad, we thought. At least he made it to the sink and not all over the kitchen table, counter, floor, or elsewhere that would require someone to have to actually clean it up…but it didn’t end there. After puking, he decided it would be a good idea to lay down (pass out) on the couch. Good, he’ll rest, feel like shit in the morning, and move on with his life. NO WAY JOSE! It didn’t end at that. Shortly after laying down, he jumped up and decided that he’d puke in a 16oz. Solo cup that was on Jon’s coffee table. Well, he missed the cup, and got it all over the coffee table, remote controls, and his carpet, which is light in color, by the way. Hell, even if he made it INTO the cup, that 16oz. volume would certainly not hold what came out of Dino. Poor guy. Jon took the coffee table and threw it out on the front lawn. I barely remember getting the hose from the side of the house, but I do remember spraying down the coffee table, and the remotes, unfortunately.

Saturdays like this are to die for!

You just can’t beat it. It’s 59 degrees and the humidity is 62 percent. This IS Fall in Michigan. You just can’t beat it. We were going to do our 12 mile long run this morning, but the cabinet guy is coming over shortly to get this cabinet/microwave project done once and for al… He’s here!!!! This is Michelle’s birthday gift!
