Benjamin and Michelle Reading

· Uncategorized

I sure hope Ben likes to read. I think it does wonders for the mind. Hell, I don’t read enough. I used to love reading when I was in grade school, then I got back into it during my early 20s. For some reason, it’s slowed down as life has sped up.

Some new photos of Benjamin

· Uncategorized

I was playing around with Ben yesterday, when I noticed the sun was setting (in the back of our house) and it was casting some really cool shadows on his face. I quickly grabbed the camera and started shooting. I have posted some of these photos is my photo gallery under 2005 (link is in the right column), and here: http://photos.filias.com. You’ll need to either register for access or know the public password.

NOTE: The photo gallery can now be accessed directly by going to http://photos.filias.com. All old links you may have memorized or bookmarked should still work.

EDIT: I decided to upload a color version of this B&W shot:

RAM as an actual storage device

· Uncategorized

AnandTech has a nice review of Gigabyte’s i-RAM product. It’s a card that plugs into a PCI slot that has 4 DIMM slots in it. You buy the card for $150 and then have to buy up to 4 RAM modules to populate it with. So, for about $500, you can buy yourself a 4GB solid state storage device that could be used for a number of things including your operating system’s paging file, your boot device, your favorite game’s storage area, or a number of other things where the increased I/O performance would give you the greatest benefit.

Hell, with Windows installed on your i-RAM device, you could boot up in 9 seconds!

Yahoo bought Pixoria

· Uncategorized

Pixoria makes a product called Konfabulator, a widget system that used to be exclusive to the Apple Mac OS.

Yahoo!’s very quick and already has a site up and running with their new acquisition:

Seems like they are like Google, but not as fast. They recently bought Flickr, too, a photo sharing system.

Funny Vonage CSR Chat

· Uncategorized

I recently signed up with Vonage and called them to find out if I could use a Telephone Adapter that I bought on eBay with my existing account. After going to research this issue twice, the 2nd time being asked how I’d get a new MAC address attached to my account, he came back and said:

“Your best bet would be to return your telephone adapter to the store…yup, that’s your best bet.” < – is he for real?

The way the system works is that each telephone adapter (as well as every networking device in the world) has its own MAC address (like its unique signature). Vonage ties that MAC address to the phone number they have for you in the system. This is how it works when you take your telephone adapter with you on vacation, plug it in, and you can make and receive calls the same way you did when you were at home.

Ben is saying all sorts of things!!!

· Uncategorized

Well, not really:

He’s all full of “ooos, cooos, eeeessss, aaahhhhs”. More and more. I’m so happy. It’s hard to leave for work when I see and hear him in the morning, after his early feeding!

Thoughts from Bill Gates

· Uncategorized

My friend Waldo (Matt) sent me this. Some pretty solid points from Mr. Gates:

Bill Gates recently gave a speech at a High School about 11 things
they did not and will not learn in school. He talks about how
feel-good, politically correct teachings created a generation of kids
with no concept of reality and how this concept set them up for
failure in the real world.

Rule 1: Life is not fair - get used to it!

Rule 2: The world won’t care about your self-esteem. The world
will expect you to accomplish something BEFORE you feel good about
yourself.

Rule 3: You will NOT make $60,000 a year right out of high school. You
won’t be a vice-president with a car phone until you earn both.

Rule 4: If you think your teacher is tough, wait till you get a
boss.

Rule 5: Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your
Grandparents had a different word for burger flipping: they called it
opportunity.

Rule 6: If you mess up, it’s not your parents’ fault, so don’t whine
about your mistakes, learn from them.

Rule 7: Before you were born, your parents weren’t as boring as
they are now. They got that way from paying your bills, cleaning your
clothes and listening to you talk about how cool you thought you were. So
before you save the rain forest from the parasites of your parent’s
generation, try delousing the closet in your own room.

Rule 8: Your school may have done away with winners and losers,
but life HAS NOT. In some schools, they have abolished failing grades and
they’ll give you as MANY TIMES as you want to get the right answer. This
doesn’t bear the slightest resemblance to ANYTHING in real life.

Rule 9: Life is not divided into semesters. You don’t get summers
off and very few employers are interested in helping you FIND YOURSELF.
Do that on your own time.

Rule 10: Television is NOT real life. In real life people
actually have to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs.

Rule 11: Be nice to nerds. Chances are you’ll end up working for
one.
